Monkeypox information and resources

Dear Stanford community,

As many in our community are aware, a number of confirmed cases of monkeypox have emerged around Europe, the United States and the Bay Area. Monkeypox also has been detected in wastewater samples collected in several Bay Area locations, including Stanford, but the university has no reported cases.

These developments serve as a reminder that individuals should take steps to protect themselves and one another.

Monkeypox is not nearly as transmissible as COVID-19 and most cases are mild, but the virus can cause severe disease. The CDC has extensive information about monkeypox, including how to identify symptoms and avoid higher-risk behaviors.

Students are encouraged to contact an advice nurse at Vaden Health Services if they have symptoms or need to report confirmed cases. Faculty, staff and postdoctoral scholars with symptoms are encouraged to consult their primary care physician and to report confirmed cases by emailing Stanford University Occupational Health Center.

Vaccine availability is limited, and the university does not have its own supply. Anyone seeking a vaccine should consult their local public health agency.

The university’s Public Health Steering Committee will continue monitoring conditions and public health protocols, and will update our community as needed.

Sincerely,

James R. Jacobs, MD, PhD
