What are the special considerations for face covering use in labs?

  • Face Shield: Wear a face shield (meeting ANSI Z87.1) in addition to a face covering when working with pyrophorics, flammable solvents (>500 mL), incompatible chemicals such as strong oxidizers like nitric acid, or using an open flame. Conduct this work in a certified chemical fume hood and consider revising lab procedures to eliminate or minimize this type of work.
    • If face shields are shared, ensure they are cleaned and disinfected between users.
  • Conduct a risk assessment to determine if risks are altered by use of face coverings and modify work practices to minimize risk. Contact health-alerts@stanford.edu for assistance.
